What is Cyber Monday?

While many people still go shopping on Black Friday, retailers noticed an interesting shift in consumer behaviour around the early 2000s. In 2003 and 2004, online sales for retailers didn’t spike on Black Friday. Instead, they spiked on the Monday after.

Online retailers decided to take advantage of this trend by creating a new sales holiday – and Cyber Monday was born.

When is Cyber Monday 2022?

Cyber Monday 2022 is on 28th November. But many retailers, including 6G Internet, offer special deals a few weeks before Cyber Monday.

Broadband prices set to go even higher

Stressed couple2022 has been a bad year for broadband customers. On average, monthly tariffs have increased by 10-15%.

The big question is, will these bills continue to rise in 2023 or can UK broadband consumers finally expect some much-needed financial relief?

Will broadband prices rise in 2023?

Things are not looking good for customers hoping (or praying) to pay less for their internet in 2022 or 2023.

Research by consumer champion ‘Which?’ indicates that broadband prices are on target to go up by another 14% next year, adding an extra £100 to some annual bills.

The cost of living crisis isn’t a newspaper headline. It’s real life for millions of people in the UK.

A closer look at the 2023 price rises.

The customers locked into contracts with the big-name providers will be hit hardest. No surprise there!

According to Which?, BT Customers will see the biggest hikes; their tariffs will jump by 14%, adding £113.07 to the average annual bill.

It won’t be much better for Vodafone and TalkTalk customers. Customers signed up with these mainstream internet firms could pay an extra £92.35 and £90.15 a year, respectively.

Is anyone doing anything about this?

Which? recently launched its ‘cost of living’ campaign. It’s calling on the government and mainstream broadband providers to do more to help customers.

Which? wants to see:

  • More social tariffs
  • An end to early termination charges for customers who want to switch providers before their current deal expires
  • A serious discussion on capping mid-contract price rises

“It is unacceptable that many broadband customers are facing price hikes of up to £113 on their bill during an unrelenting cost of living crisis,” says Rocio Concha, Which? Director of Policy and Advocacy. “Customers should be allowed to leave their contract without penalty if prices are hiked mid-contract – regardless of whether or not these increases can be said to be ‘transparent’.”

What can I do about these future price rises?

There’s an easy way to avoid the pain ahead; switch to an internet provider that won’t raise your bill.

6G Internet is one of those providers. Our price rise promise means we’ll never EVER raise your bill mid-contract. Guaranteed.

With 6G Internet, you’ll never pay more than you agree to because that’s how things should be.

High-speed internet finally arrives in Blackpool!

Sea front at Blackpool where high speed internet from 6G is now available

High Speed Broadband in Blackpool – New Fixed Wireless Fibre Speed Network

The new broadband network goes live later this month and promises to deliver superfast internet at low prices, to thousands of premises in and around Blackpool.

Access to fibre speed broadband for residents of Blackpool

It’s fantastic news for the local residents who’ve long been ignored by the so-called ‘big internet’ providers. Like many areas across the North West, Blackpool has some of the worst internet connections in the UK.

(we need to check which connection is available to your home, that’s why we need your postcode and house number 😀)

Ignored by national suppliers

Many mainstream broadband firms refused to build fibre speed broadband networks in Blackpool, citing high construction costs and a low return on investment. In other words, they didn’t think the town or its people were worth it.

Residents are forced to pay over the odds for sub-standard broadband connections, while others simply can’t afford monthly tariffs and have no access to essential digital services. Digital exclusion is a serious issue that leads to fewer economic opportunities and poorer health outcomes, including a reduced life expectancy.

“Blackpool is one of the UK’s ‘left behind’ areas,” says Dr Luke Munford, a lecturer in health economics at the University of Manchester. “Digital exclusion is a huge contributor to the struggles the town faces.”

Great value broadband for Blackpool residents

6G Internet is a high-speed broadband network that delivers guaranteed high-speed internet at extremely affordable prices. For less than £20 p/m, you’ll receive enough broadband to support browsing, streaming, gaming and home working on multiple devices. Also, with 6G Internet’s no price rise promise, you’ll never pay more than you agreed to.

6G Internet will ensure that everyone in Blackpool has the same opportunity to benefit from fast and reliable broadband connections. The Internet for everyone campaign will donate 20% of 6G Internet’s network coverage to schools, charities and local organisations in need. It also provides tablets and other digital devices to children from families experiencing economic hardship.

How does 6G Fibre speed broadband network work?

The network uses wireless transmitters, installed on roof-tops, telecommunication masts and street poles, to send full-fibre Wi-Fi signals through the air.

Phil Walker is the Director of Finance at 6G Internet. He says, “Over the last 15 years, billions of pounds have been invested in research and development for wireless broadband technology. NASA uses it to communicate with its Mars rover. Tesla cars use it to update and navigate.”

“Now we are using it to make sure people in Blackpool can access the internet faster and cheaper than anywhere else in the UK. It’s a true game-changer. Residents and businesses will be able to take full advantage of technology and services that are at the cutting edge of what is possible. If anywhere deserved a digital upgrade, then it’s Blackpool. We’re excited to see the impact the network will have.”

6Ginternet is helping people through the cost of living crisis

The price of everything is rising, forcing people to make hard choices. A recent report from the BBC found that many of us can no longer afford to pay for food, heating, utilities, and a monthly broadband connection.

Some broadband packages linked to inflation have seen mid-contract increases as high as 11%. And these price hikes have hit the financially vulnerable the hardest.

7% of low earners are now in arrears on their internet bills, owing an average of £171 each. And with further price rises likely, the financial situation for millions of UK households is not looking good.

Lewa and her family have already cut back on food and data to make their income last through the month. Speaking to the BBC, Lewa said:

“Financially, everything has become really hard. I’m struggling with three kids, all at different stages. I have to share internet with my neighbour to save money. My son does all his homework at the library because we don’t always have the internet at home.”

Hafsha Dadabhai Shaikh, who works to help people access free data, explains how Lewa’s situation is far from uncommon:

“So many people out there are making those choices between ‘do I have enough money to feed myself and my family this month?…and do I have enough money left over to put in the kitty to buy some data’?”

And it shouldn’t be this way, continues Hafsha:

“Data and broadband are vital now. “Families have to go online to see their GPs, order prescriptions, manage finances, and get the best deals from supermarkets.”

Culture secretary Nadine Dorries wants big broadband providers to introduce measures to tackle rising tariffs. As of yet, few have taken any serious action.

Broadband provider 6Ginternet understands that reliable and accessible internet is no longer a luxury. Instead, it’s a necessity.

So while everyone else is talking about how to lower prices and help ordinary people, 6Ginternet continues to give away a large portion of its network coverage to schools, charities, local authorities, and other organisations.

It’s called the “Internet for Everyone Campaign,’ and it ensures that everyone can use the internet, whenever they need it.

“Working with 6Ginternet means we can help older people get connected free of charge,” says an Age UK Blackburn spokesperson. “This allows them to experience the many benefits of digital technology, such as keeping in touch with friends and family, shopping online, and using health services online.”

    Wi-Fi Jargon Buster – Part 2

We’ve already busted the jargon around Wi-Fi inside your home but sadly the jargon doesn’t stop there! Here, we explain the technical terms for Wi-Fi outside of your home:

    What does ADSL mean?

Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line. The most basic broadband connection available today. It is faster than older dial-up technologies but less reliable than fibre. It operates purely over copper telephone lines and sends data along these at speeds up to 24Mbps, though often much slower.

    ADSL

    What is FTTC?

Fibre To The Cabinet is a technology using a combination of fast fibre-optic cables and slower copper wires. Typically, the maximum download speed is up to 80Mbps and often much less.

    Fibre to the cabinet FTTC

    What does Cabinet mean?

These are the green boxes sited along our streets and roads. Our internet and phone connections come from there. Data is sent along copper or wire cables before being routed to our homes.

    Cabinet

    What is FTTP?

Fibre To The Premises does without the copper wires used in FTTC and delivers fast fibre-optic internet speeds of up to 1Gbps directly to the modem/router in your home. However, availability is currently limited and restricted to highly populated business and residential areas.

Fibre to the premises - FTTP

    What is Air Fibre?

Air Fibre uses a combination or fibre-optic and wireless technologies to deliver ultrafast internet speeds. The technology is more future proof with speeds of up to 6Gbps expected within 5 years.

    Wi-Fi Jargon Buster

Jargon busterBaffled by technical jargon when browsing for broadband? We can help you know your bits from your bytes…

    What does Bit mean?

A bit is the smallest amount of data (0 or 1) used when describing the transfer speed of data. Not to be confused with bytes!

    What does Bandwidth mean?

You will usually hear this referred to in bits per second (bps), megabits per second (Mbps), or even Gigabits per second (Gbps). It refers to the maximum amount of data transmitted during a specific amount of time – one second.

    What does Ethernet mean?

This connects routers and internet enabled devices by wire within your home. The connection is more reliable than Wi-Fi and often preferred by
    competitive gamers.

    What does Byte mean?

A byte is a unit of data that contains 8 bits. Data storage and file size is usually described in terms of bytes whereas speed of internet is described in bits.

    What does Download speed mean?

Like bandwidth, this is the speed at which your connection can receive data FROM the internet. You will see these referred to in Megabits
per second (Mbps) and Gigabits per second (Gbps).

    What is Wi-Fi?

Wi-Fi is a wireless network technology that uses radio signals to connect internet capable devices to a router which in turn connects to the internet.

6G Internet teams up with Burnley FC as it prepares to pitch high-quality broadband to town

Internet service provider 6G Internet is supporting Burnley FC in kicking off the football season after becoming an official business club member.

East Lancashire-based 6G Internet has linked up with the Clarets as the team begins its 2021/2022 Premier League campaign.

The business, based in Burnley, gave the club its backing ahead of a planned roll-out of its internet services in Burnley.

6G Internet has long-term plans to branch out even further afield across Lancashire and the North West.

    6G Internet -Burnley FC
Phil Walker, from 6G Internet, with Paul Walsh, from Burnley FC

Phil Walker, director of 6G Internet, said both the link-up with Burnley FC and its expansion into the town showed the business’s commitment to become part of the community.

He said, “6G Internet is an established East Lancashire business that has always been proud of its roots so we are keen to become part of the fabric of the communities we serve.

“We were keen to show our support to the club when the opportunity presented itself and we are now looking forward to seeing the 6G Internet brand featured around Turf Moor and within match-day programmes as our relationship goes from strength to strength.

“We are now eagerly awaiting the extension of our network within the town.”

Business club membership includes a host of benefits, including the 6G Internet branding featuring on mid-tier LED displays during matches and a 24-hour LED screen outside Turf Moor.

Club Local Brand Partnership Executive Paul Walsh said, “We are always keen to forge alliances with Burnley businesses and so we are delighted to announce that 6G Internet has joined the Burnley FC Business Club. We would like to thank them for their support so far and we look forward to developing our work together in the future.”

Rather than using the copper cable network like its rivals, 6G Internet installs and uses its own network, enabling it to provide high-quality broadband without the wait or inconvenience of digging up roads to lay fibre-optic cables. The network is designed, built and managed by 6G Internet entirely, meaning it is not reliant on other parties such as telecommunications providers.

Phil said, “Taking this approach means 6G Internet can offer a network that is less expensive to run and can be expanded much faster than other providers.”

Since launch, 6G Internet has worked with community organisations such as churches, mosques, charities and schools to improve existing connections and create new initiatives for locals to access the internet.

Phil added, “We believe that for too many people, costs and long-term contracts are the barrier to being able to connect to the internet at home. However, being connected isn’t just about watching the latest movie. For some, an internet connection can be their only access to essential services such as healthcare, socialising, education and finance, which is why we remain committed to helping people get connected.”
